In March 2020, our world and
way of life literally changed overnight. The spread of the deadly COVID-19 made
national and international headlines. People got sick by the millions and
thousands began dying. The way the virus spread (from person to person) seemed
like a story straight out of Hollywood and movies like I am Legend or 27 Days.
Countries closed borders, and
citizens were being asked to “shelter in place”. In the United States,
companies sent workers home to telecommute or furloughed others. Government
leaders ordered non-essential businesses to close. Essential businesses asked
employees to wear latex gloves and spray counters and wear facemasks.
And then the strangest reaction
of all—people panicked and started buying in bulk not nonperishable food, dairy
products, or meat and produce; they started buying toilet paper. Yes, stores
couldn’t keep toilet paper stocked on the shelves. Walk into any grocery store
and the toilet paper and even the paper towels and tissues, all gone. They also
bought out the bottled water supplies.
The question on many people’s
minds: why toilet paper? You’re not going to die from lack of toilet paper.
You’re not even going to die from lack of bottled water, because cities aren’t
shutting down water systems. You will though die from lack of food. Yet food
wasn’t the hot item. To be frank, if you don’t have food … well, you don’t need
toilet paper!
This phenomenon got me
wondering: what do you need to know or do during a pandemic like this one?
Since toilet paper isn’t going to solve much more than cleanliness, why did
people choose to panic over it vs. food items and other necessities more
critical to survival?
I wrote Stop Buying Toilet: Surviving 90 Days to provide sane, rational
information about what you need to know to successfully survive a pandemic like
this one. Many of the items I’m going to discuss are good for more than just a
pandemic. This information will help with many other aspects of illness and
ways to assist in prevention. Please follow the guidelines I provided in the
Preface—and more importantly, stay safe and healthy!
